Spazio 1999

Incongruencis a part, us invidi a riscuvierzi la serie, magari in VDC o DVD o lait a viodi tal interdet!

In 1976, we kids were enchanted by a beautiful English science fiction TV series: “Space 1999”. In those times in north-eastern Italy there where only two Italian channels (1 and 2, generally with images in white and black) plus the Yugoslavian channel “Koper-Capodistria” (broadcasting in color since several years) but quality was higher than today where you see only chefs and gourmets (I hate them!), TV carpet sales, reality shows like “The Island of Famous” or wrangles. Well. You would know the history of Alpha Moon base, with the Moon that, because of nuclear explosions, escaped from her orbit wandering in space, but we did notice inconsistencies! In every episode the “Alphans”, during their wandering, contacted several planets and humanoid civilisations but actually, only to reach the “Alpha Centaury” system (the star closer to us after the Sun) it would take 500.000 years! so, the script-writer invented a sort of “hyperspace doors” (Miracle!).
And then, why aliens were all humanoids (indeed, just humans – imagine aliens identical to us evolving in other planets… it’s ridiculous!) and speaking English (dubbed in Italian)? Ah, yes, they have a sort of “telepathy”… but on the second season of episodes, what’s the sense to call “Luton” the planet of the plants community? This is the name of an English town! And, always on the second season, why change the dramatic rock signature tune by Barry Gray and replace it with horrible music by the roman duet “Oliver Onions”?
“That’s a monster destroying all the spaceships…”
Oh, what a shit tune!
In 1976 I was a suggestible kid and I remember fearful episodes… once I wanted to jump out of my first-floor window.
Apart from the inconsistencies, I invite you to discover again the series, even on VDC or DVD otherwise on the web. For instance, you will discover that the actress Catherine Schell (Maya, the transmute: she can transform herself in all life forms), heroine of the second season, had a part on one first season episode where she was a sort of girl-robot but she came to a bad end (her face was disintegrated by a laser).
But don’t forget the mythical John Koenig, performed by the great Martin Landau. If he didn’t command Moon base, I don’t know if the 300 Alphans would have been able to avoid so many disasters.
Gerry and Sylvia Anderson had the idea of the series; before they produced U.F.O. and here we’d open another subject…
Well, now you’ll enjoy at least the first “Space 1999” episode. Have fun!
